《上海史》是用英文写成的第一部翔实记载19世纪上海租界历史的著作，其最大特点是资料扎实。书中资料来源于工部局档案、《北华捷报》等报纸，还有当时人的记载。兰宁、库寿龄两人都在上海生活多年，对上海有比较广泛的了解。书分两卷，上卷包括两个部分，第一部分主要是历史大背景资料，第二部分从上海开埠前的时代背景写起，写到上海本地，如何开始有租界，以及租界各方面的情况，叙事截至1857年。下卷叙述1857至1900年的上海历史，既有按时间先后排列的，也有按事件类别划分的。
