1949年4月23日，共軍攻進南京；10月1日，毛澤東在北平宣布中華人民共和國成立。「中華民國」就此退出。国民党政权輾轉「播遷」台灣，至今正好六十年。如今，在台灣已經罕見「中華民國」一詞。「民國三十八年」更是乏人使用。這個紀年的消失，反映了台灣歷史上的一個時段化為黑洞，無疑還 在它的位置上兀然聳立，卻無聲無息。六十年過去，從當時巨變中掙扎過來的人，已經開始凋零，但台灣仍然必須面對1949。一段如此關鍵、如此引起情緒反應的歷史，豈能化為一片空白或者一團漆黑？但是要回顧1949年並不容易：個人的禍福與集體的成敗不是同一回事，道德的是非與歷史方向似乎沒有關連，短時段的狀態無法預示長時段的趨勢，而回顧者個人的出身與遭遇，更注定了他會賦予這個年份甚麼意義。 目前，以1949為主題的書籍，已經出版好幾種；學術界也舉辦了幾場研討會。《思想》一貫強調歷史意識的關鍵作用，更著重兩岸乃至於大華人世界的思想源頭，於是繼前一期發表楊儒賓先生的大作，在本期以1949為主題推出專輯。其實，1949並不是台灣的專利（「民國三十八年」也不是）：它所啟動的歷史場景變幻，同時改變了中國大陸、台灣、以及香港和澳門的整體面貌與地緣位置，以及這些社會中幾億人口的命運。我們邀集的幾篇文章，各有獨特的見地，但自然尚無足以把捉那個歷史關口的無窮意義。
